Skill-Ups Recommendations
For skilling up, I recommend:
Pick a Guild that makes something you desire to have for yourself. If you use a lot of food, select Cooking. If you like to fish or need furniture, select Woodworking.
Check out the items made by each Guild and see which ones most appeal to you.
If you have a lot of gil, you can easily join a Guild such as Alchemy, but if you are starting out, select a Guild that doesn't require much money to get started. I recommend Fishing and Cooking.
To Skill-up you do not have to start with a recipe in your current level, you can choose a recipe that is 5-6 times higher than your current skills.
When creating a list, the recipe includes the Guild and the number next to it is the skill-cap for that Guild.
For instance, if a skill-cap is 3, it doesn't mean you have to be level 3 to make it, it means, that you can earn skill-up points for that item until you reach level 3. After you reach level 3, you may continue to make the item, but will receive no further skill-up points for it.
So select an item that 1) you desire to have, 2) ingredients are easily obtainable and affordable, 3) you can sell and make a profit.
For instance, in cooking, making Pet Food is a waste of time as it doesn't sell and unless you are a beastmaster, you don't need it for yourself.
Some people turn around and sell their "junk" items back to the Guild merchant. You won't make a profit this way, but can quickly get rid of it out of your inventory.
Making Grilled Hare is a good recipe to select, because if you melee, you can use this in your party battles for attack strength, and it sells well. You may also desire to give food gifts to friends in your Linkshell. Just make sure they are in their Mog House when you send it so they don't clog up your delivery box.
Insect Paste is also a good selection, because you can sell it easily on the Auction House and you may use it in your own fishing for moat carps. Especially if you desire to quest for the Lushang's Fishing Rod.
When starting out in the game, farm (a term that means soloing and killing beasts to obtain items from them) for your crystals and ingredients. Later when you start to make money, you'll simply wish to buy the crystals and ingredients, as you'll likely make more money synthing than farming.
